ADANA, Turkey — The dozen or so rescue employees stood immobile, listening for indicators of survivors.
They stood atop rubble — the stays of a 14-storey construction, certainly one of many buildings that made up an condo advanced in Adana, a metropolis in southern Turkey about 100 miles from the epicenter of Monday’s earthquake.
Residents gathered outdoors within the chilly evening and began a bonfire to remain heat as they questioned why their buildings survived. Additionally they contemplated the danger of going again into their residences — if even only for a minute to seize an heirloom or two — as they waited for extra help to reach.
The climate was delaying extra rescue employees and humanitarian help. The freeway that connects Adana with jap Turkey traverses mountains and was closed due to snow. Cleanup, rescue and medical crews needed to take the longer, coastal route.
In the intervening time, Adana, like so many different locations within the quake-stricken components of Turkey and Syria, was counting on native search and rescue crews and volunteers.
On the condo block, the crew resumed its work. By early Tuesday, it had but to search out any survivors.
