Joe Biden’s ABC interview will not quell doubts about his future

THE PRESIDENT was tanned, rested and largely coherent throughout a high-pressure prime-time interview with ABC Information on July fifth. Joe Biden expressed confidence, bordering on conceitedness, about his presidency and talent to beat Donald Trump in November. And he made clear that he had no plans to desert his re-election bid. Had the interview gone badly, Mr Biden would certainly be stepping apart subsequent week. That now seems to be much less doubtless.

Tieless and at instances visibly impatient, the 81-year-old president refused to countenance the likelihood that his presence on the prime of the ticket had turn out to be a legal responsibility for down-ballot Democrats, as polls recommend. “Look, I imply, if the Lord almighty got here down and mentioned, ‘Joe, get out of the race,’ then I’d get out of the race,” Mr Biden mentioned. “However the Lord almighty’s not coming down. I imply, these hypotheticals.”
